This oft-reissued recording includes music from three early Sullivan works: Incidental Music to The Tempest; Suite from The Merchant of Venice; and, Overture in C, "In Memoriam". The first two are presented only in excerpts.

The recording gives a good idea of Sullivan's talents in other genres. At the time it was made, recordings of Sullivan's non-operatic music were rare. With The Tempest and The Merchant of Venice now available complete and numerous other recordings of "In Memoriam" available, the listener now has many options for studying this part of Sullivan's output.
